Introduction of Firewall
Hello guys, this is NBC Security team. Today we’re going to tell you about different types of firewall and why the firewall is most important for your device. Firewall is most important for your device. After you read this post you’ll be able to choose which firewall is best for you as per your implementation environment. Also, you need to know how does the firewall works? Okay, let’s start.
Types of Firewall
The firewall protects our computer from the Internet hackers. Internet hackers can steal our bank details, credit card details, online payment details etc. from our computers. And they reduce our bank balance thousands of dollars to zero within seconds. Firewall is must be active on our computer and computer networks. There are three types of firewall:-
- Packet Filtering Firewall
- Application/ Proxy Firewall
- Hybrid Firewall
Before starting to know details of types of firewall you should know What is Data Packets? When we going to download a file of size is 200mb from the Internet. Then we’ll not receive the entire 200mb data at once. But we’ll receive small packets of data such as 5mb every second. Some of the parts of this 5mb packet are occupied with information like which computer sending the data, which computer receiving the data etc. The remaining portion of this 5mb packet contains the part of the actual data which we want to download. So, part of the actual data + some information together found it data packet or IP packet and this part of actual data is called payload.
1. Packet Filtering Firewall
Suppose I’m downloading a file from the Internet. When the data packet arrives a packet filtering firewall it only checks the sender’s and the receivers IP address and the Port number present in the data packet. The rules little in a list called access control list are used for data packet verification. If everything is ok then the data packets allow to pass through packet filtering firewall and then to my computer. But What is Port Number? Actually, these are some digits written after IP address separated with colons. For example 192.168.1.1:8080 and are useful for successful data packet transfer.
The packet filtering firewall is already present in Internet routers. So they are the cheapest and quickest way to implements. The only limitations of Packet Filtering Firewall are that it’s don’t check data portion that Payloads of the data packets. So the hackers can send some malicious data pack in this payload section. Hense Packet Filtering Firewall provides low security.
2. Application/ Proxy Firewall
When users enter the websites, for example, www.google.com in the web browsers. Proxy Firewall receives the request and forwards that request to the Internet. The web server on the Internet receives the request and respond back to the proxy firewall with the requested information. The proxy firewall receives the information and forwards it to the original client for his giving pleasure. In this whole process, the web server thinks that the proxy firewall is the one who wants to visit www.google.com. That is proxy firewall don’t let the web server know the origin of the request. So proxy firewall protects us from the potential attackers on the Internet. By not this closing is computers identity. But I should say by not this closing are computers IP address. This Application/ Proxy Firewall also check the payload of the received data packets. So they are much slower than the Packet Filtering Firewall.
3. Hybrid Firewall
Hybrid Firewall combines two firewalls Packet Filtering Firewall and Application/ Proxy Firewall in series to enhance the security. If they’re connected in parallel then the security of the connection will be reduced to the parameters they find by packet filtering firewall. That is Application Firewall will be of no use if the two firewalls are connected in parallel. For this reason, Hybrid Firewalls use for Packet Filtering and Application Firewall in series. As a result, Hybrid Firewalls provide the best security comparing the two firewalls of Packet Filtering Firewall and Application/ Proxy Firewall.
Now you can choose which firewall will be best for you will depend on its implementation environment. For example, Packet Filtering Firewall will be best for the low-risk environment (like Florist shops), Application/ Proxy Firewall will be best for medium risk environment (like Universities) and Hybrid Firewall will be best for the high-risk environment (like hospitals) which database contents important reports of the patients. Now, you can choose the firewalls as per your needs.
